Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival
Bordered by serene floating gardens and whole villages floating on stilts, Inle Lake is a jewel in the crown of Myanmar’s Shan State. The lake measures 13.5 miles across and is the site of the annual Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival, which takes place over 18 days every October. The occasion is undoubtedly one of the most important events on the Buddhist calendar and is a spectacle not to be missed if you’re visiting the area.
Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival
The Festival centres around five revered images of the Buddha, four of which are paraded around the lake in a stunning gilded barge pulled by longboats. Each of the boats is manned by hundreds of rowers, who propel the crafts forward in the distinctive one-legged method of rowing used by the Intha people indigenous to the area. The festivities, which go far beyond the breath-taking processions on the lake, attract thousands of people. Get caught up in the thrill of the boat races or attend one of the many dance performances or funfairs that takes place on the shore of the lake. This year, the festival takes place from 17 October until 3 November.
If you’re in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit the Nge Hpe Kyaung Monastery, where the monks have trained local felines to jump through hoops. Plus, the ‘five-day market’ stops at various destinations around Inle Lake and is a great place to pick up food and handicrafts.
