Naga Fireball is a spectacular phenomenon in which mysterious glowing red balls of fire burst from the waters of the Mekong River high into the air. It has been told from generation to generation that Nagas (half human and half serpentine beings in the Mekong River) are those who light and release the fireballs at the end of Buddhist Lent to pay respect to the Buddha. The annual Naga Fireball Festival marks this unexplained event every year between mid to late October and early November, during which time people from different provinces travel to Nong Khai to see these enigmatic fireballs with their own eyes.

If you are looking for a place to experience this one-of-a-kind festival which cannot be seen in any other parts of the world, the top three locations to observe Naga fireballs along the Mekong River include Nong Khai Municipality Office, Phon Phisai District and Rattanawapi District.
The most convenient way to get to Nong Khai is to fly from Bangkok to Udon Thani. The flight normally takes only 1 hour. After that, you can take a bus to Nong Khai which is about 47 minutes from Udon Thani.
