Immerse yourself in an explosion of colour at Chiang Mai’s annual Flower Festival, and you will see just how well the city lives up to its moniker, ‘The Rose of the North'. Ever since the 1970s, the event has offered oodles of family fun, from parades and displays to dance performances and beauty contests. What began as a local festival now entices visitors from across the world who travel to see the flurry of colours and blooms that the festival showcases. The event usually begins on the first Friday in February and runs through until late on a Sunday evening.

There’s plenty to see and do at the festival, however, the street parade on Saturday is worth making time for. A succession of beautifully decorated floats travels through the town, accompanied by traditional dancers, vintage cars, marching bands and other performers – including local schoolchildren. The route of the parade changes slightly every year, however, it always ends up at Suan Buak Haad Park where the floats are displayed for the rest of the festival.

The road outside the park is closed to traffic and transformed into a walking street market, where there are food vendors, entertainment stages and stalls selling a rainbow of flowers and plants. There’s also a prize-giving ceremony for the best flower displays, plus a famous beauty contest where you can see the Queen of the Chiang Mai Flower Festival crowned. The park is situated in the southwest corner of the Old City on the inside of the moat.

Practical tips

It’s not just the area around Suan Buak Haad Park that transforms itself into a floral spectacle during the festival. Many residents and business owners decorate the front of their homes with beautiful flower arrangements, so the best way to enjoy this feast of colour is by making your way around the city on foot.
