The Story of Machchafushi
One island, a thousand moment, story in each
Machchafushi, meaning “Fish Island” in Dhivehi, perfectly reflects the essence of this unique retreat in South Ari Atoll. Surrounded by coral reefs teeming with marine life, it is a place where nature and culture come together in harmony.
Floating in the heart of the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), a UNESCO-recognised wonder, Machchafushi offers unparalleled access to year-round whale shark encounters, boasting one of the world’s highest resighting rates. Guests may also encounter graceful manta rays and an abundance of marine life that drift by like legends of the sea. Once a secluded, uninhabited island, Machchafushi has long held a place in the cultural heart of the Maldives, and today, as part of this protected marine reserve, it remains authentic, sustainable, and deeply connected to the ocean.
In 1992, the island welcomed its first guests as Machchafushi Island Resort, offering tranquil beachfront villas inspired by Maldivian tradition. The resort evolved in 2009 under Centara Hotels & Resorts, introducing new refinements while preserving its natural charm. Encircled by an award-winning house reef five times the size of the island, Machchafushi is an underwater haven with over 1,000 fish species and 200 varieties of coral. From the Dive Centre, guests can slip into crystal waters to encounter blacktip sharks, sea turtles, parrotfish, stingrays, octopus, clownfish, and more, an adventure as vibrant as a living marine tapestry.
In January 2025, the island proudly returned to its original name, Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa Maldives, now part of The Centara Collection. This new chapter celebrates refined experiences rooted in heritage, nature, and timeless Maldivian hospitality.

The Famous Kudhi Maa Shipwreck
The house reef at Machchafushi is one of the island’s most remarkable features, spanning over five times the land area of the resort. Beginning in a shallow lagoon and descending to depths of 60 metres, it offers a diverse and dynamic underwater landscape that delights snorkellers and divers alike. A standout highlight is the sunken Japanese cargo ship, resting at lengths of 52 metres, widths of 8 metres, and depths of 12–30 metres. Sunk in 1999, the wreck has transformed into a vibrant coral habitat, teeming with marine life including glassfish, trevally, snapper, white-tip reef sharks, and nurse sharks. Keen eyes may also spot the resident stonefish and frogfish, masters of camouflage within this thriving ecosystem.
Nearby, Anemone Alley showcases large coral formations and an abundance of sea life, flourishing where ocean currents converge beneath the seasonal seaplane platform. This area, like the wreck, provides an ever-changing hub of biodiversity, making the house reef not just a highlight of Machchafushi but a world-class underwater playground for both novice snorkellers and experienced divers.
