Mui Ne Red Sand Dune Holiday? 5 Essential Items You Need to Pack
Vietnam is home to some stunning Red Sand Dunes - they’re located off the north end of Mui Ne which is about a four-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh. Mui Ne is a gorgeous tourist destination and is perfect for anyone who is looking to experience mother nature at her most grand.
Never visited Sand Dunes before? Not to worry - we have compiled a list to help you plan your next exciting adventure. Here are five essential items that you should seriously consider packing.
- Sunscreen / Bug Repellent
With temperatures averaging around 27⁰C (81⁰F), it is highly advisable that you closely monitor your sunscreen regimen. The weather, especially around the sand dunes, is hot and dry all year round, and your skin will bear the brunt of it without proper protection. People who are unaccustomed to tropical climates ought to stay particularly vigilant as to how many hours they’ve been exposed to the elements and how long it has been since the last application of cream / sunscreen. When picking out sunscreen make sure that it has a SPF of 30 or over; this will ensure that your skin is protected as best as possible from the harsh climate. This sort of environment also attracts pests such as mosquitoes, so add a good bug repellent to your cart during your next shopping trip.
- Jacket / Warm Clothing
It may sound surprising, but just as the daytime hours are really hot and dry, the nighttime temperatures can really drop to the point of being ‘cold’. If you are planning to stay out late or overnight, bring a nice insulated jacket and if you’re planning to camp out, make sure you have sufficient blankets.
- Reusable Filtered Water Bottle
Being out in the Sand Dunes is not like being out in the city where all your essentials like food and water are readily accessible. We highly advise that you bring a large reusable water bottle, even better, one with a built-in filtration system as tap water in Vietnam is not properly cleaned and filtered. The last thing you want is to get sick from dirty water and / or dehydration due to the hot and dry weather.
- UPF / Sun Protective Clothing
As mentioned earlier, the weather during the day is hot and dry, and the sun is often unforgiving - spending the rest of your holiday with painful sunburn is no fun. We recommend that you wear protective clothing with a high Ultra Violet Protection (UPF) rating. The higher the number, the better a garment is at stopping harmful UV radiation from getting through. This goes for everything - hats, gloves, sleeves, pants and shirts. A UPF 50 is recommended which means that it will block out up to 98% of the sun’s UV rays.
- Appropriate Footwear
Under no circumstances should you wear sandals or flip-flops when visiting the Sand Dunes - your feet will suffer immensely. With temperatures in constant flux, the shoes you bring should be able to protect your feet from getting burned as well as keeping them when the temperatures drop, as well as be able to prevent sand and debris from getting in. We recommend sneakers or boots like Converse and Timberlands.
