Chiang Mai is home to hundreds of coffee shops and cafes, each with their own themes and atmosphere. But how many of them serve vegan or organic meals? There are a few excellent vegan restaurants in Chiang Mai – if you know where to look. Here are our favourite places:
Free Bird Café
Free Bird Café was one of the first vegan venues to open in the city of Chiang Mai, and it offers a variety of dishes and beverages that will have you coming back for more. Free Bird prepares coffee and tea with home-made almond and coconut milk. If you’re feeling hungry, try one of their popular smoothie bowls, salads, or Burmese curries. All the while, keep in mind that Free Bird is about more than just vegan meals; this fine establishment also gives back to society by teaching refugee kids.
Bird’s Nest Café
Bird’s Nest Café is another great choice, with its laid-back atmosphere and eco-friendly commitments. The café uses rustic and nature-inspired décor, while sourcing its ingredients from local farms. While Bird’s Nest may be on the smaller side, it has a big heart and a superb ambience. They serve a wide range of snacks, as well as an all-day breakfast which follows what is freshest in each season. As for the drinks, their iced coconut coffee, smoothies, and regular coffee all hit the spot. The café is open every day, and conveniently located in the Old City of Chiang Mai.
Reform Kafe
Also in the Old City is the beautifully decorated Reform Kafe. Their menu features classic Thai and Western dishes. The most popular meal is their mushroom burger, leaving many diners surprised at how they manage to make a vegan dish this succulent and flavourful. Their grilled sandwiches are also a great choice that will delight anyone in the mood for a tasty and satisfying meal. Yet this is Thailand, after all – and if you’d prefer to have Thai food, we recommend you try the classic massaman curry.
Goodsouls Kitchen
As an upscale vegan restaurant, Goodsouls Kitchen also has both Western and Thai dishes for you to enjoy. With the same owners as the popular Reform Kafe that we mentioned above, Goodsouls offers a scrumptious quinoa burger and a selection of wraps that are equally delicious. It’s open for breakfast too, so a visit to Goodsouls can get your day started off right.
Basecamp Coffee House
Basecamp Coffee House is located at the bottom of Doi Suthep mountain – the perfect location for lovers of the great outdoors. This café is an excellent place to get tips on the best activities in the area, as most of the customers who visit are outdoor enthusiasts. And of course, Basecamp Coffee House serves up hearty, nutrient-rich vegan eats to get you fuelled up for the day.
The vegan restaurants and cafés listed above are easily accessible for visitors, as they are located in popular tourist areas in and around the city. By committing to vegan principles without compromising on taste, these vegan restaurants in Chiang Mai let you enjoy the very best organic food during your adventures.
