A guide to Bangkok’s Comedy Clubs

Russell Peters, Jim Gaffigan, and Dave Chappelle. These are just three of the huge names in stand-up comedy that have recently performed in Bangkok. When people think of Bangkok, stand-up comedy certainly isn’t one of the first things that comes to mind. But the Big Mango is increasingly playing host to international comedy superstars. The city is also home to a thriving stand-up comedy scene of its own, with both expat and Thai performers delivering big laughs. If you’re a stand-up comedy fan, you should definitely check out these four Bangkok comedy clubs:

RAW Comedy

Location: The Live Lounge, above the Sportsman on Sukhumvit Soi 13.
Showtimes: Every Wednesday at 8 pm.
Entry fee: 100 THB

RAW Comedy is Bangkok’s only weekly open mic show and is the backbone of the Bangkok comedy scene. With a mix of performers ranging from touring pros, to seasoned local comics, to first-timers, RAW Comedy is must-see for fans of the art form. The show offers newcomers a chance to get on stage, and provides the more seasoned comics with a platform to test and hone new material. Every single show is different, but the presence of creative directors and veteran Bangkok-based comics Chris Raufeisen and Justin St-Denis guarantees big laughs. And, whenever there’s a dull moment, mic’d up DJ/comic Jackson Foshay is always there to chime in with a clever quip to get the crowd going again. You also never know who’s going to perform. International superstar Hannibal Burress even dropped by once. Just remember that this is an open mic comedy show in Bangkok: It’s not suitable for children or the easily-offended.

The Khaosan Comedy Club

Location: Khaosan Park Resort, Khao San Road
Showtimes: Every night at 9pm
Entry fee: 300 THB (includes a free drink)

At the Khaosan Comedy Club, a mix of Bangkok’s most seasoned comics, rising stars, and visiting touring pros perform to raucous crowds of inebriated backpackers. Led by the always-ridiculously-attired comic and occasional Thai TV personality Jonathan Samson (who’s almost always in a Hawaiian Shirt, cargo shorts, and Crocs), this show is an unexpected gem for tourists. If you’re wandering along the famous backpacker Mecca of Khao San Road between the hours of 7 and 9pm, you’ll be sure to see the Khaosan Comedy Club’s performers carrying signs and handing out flyers for the show.

Stagetime Comedy Club

Locations: The Clubhouse on Sukhumvit Soi 23 and Tapas Café on Silom Soi 4
Showtimes: Thursdays at 7:30pm at the Clubhouse and Saturdays at 9pm at Tapas
Entry fee: Varies (250-500 THB depending on the show)

The Stagetime Comedy Club plays host to a wide variety of different-themed shows including new material competitions, the 7-Eleven show (where 11 comics each do a 7-minute set), and international headliner showcases. Led by the ever-Australian creative director Matt Wharf, Stagetime is a favourite for both audiences and performers alike.

The Comedy Club Bangkok

Location: Above the Royal Oak on Sukhumvit 33/1
Showtimes: Fridays at 8:30pm
Entry fee: Varies (250-800 THB depending on the show)

The most established club in the city, the Comedy Club Bangkok has been open since 2014 and has hosted many well-known pros like Neil Brennan, Ari Shaffir, and Gina Yashere, just to name a few. The club has shows every Friday night, alternating between stand-up and improv. Hosted by creative director and comedian/body builder Chris Wegoda, the Comedy Club Bangkok always has a great atmosphere and its shows are often world class.

If you’re an aspiring stand-up comic, an avid comedy fan, or just looking for a different kind of night out, Bangkok’s comedy clubs are the place to be for big laughs in the Big Mango.
