In recent years, Thailand has successfully reinvented its image to cater to the growing trend of dedication to health, wellness and sports. Boasting world-class sporting facilities, in-depth expertise and a growing reputation for hosting successful regional and international sports events, you can be sure that Thailand is one of the top choices for marathon running.
So, why not opt to do a marathon while on your holidays in Thailand? Whether you are a running fanatic or want to tick the marathon off your bucket list, Thailand has options for all abilities. From mountain races, to beach routes, to city courses, there will always be something suited to you. Here’s the ultimate guide to marathons in Thailand!
1. Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok
Officially presided over and organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok is one of the country’s most popular running events. Taking place in and around Bangkok, you will experience the sleeping giant that is Bangkok awakening as you run the streets in the early morning. The course will take you to some of Bangkok's most prominent landmarks such as Victory Monument, King Rama V Monument, Rama VIII Bridge and the Golden Mountain.
The race features three competitive categories:
- Marathon (42.195km)
- Half Marathon (21.1km)
- 10km
Moreover, for casual runners, there is also a 5km Family Fun Run provided as well.
2. GC Rayong Marathon
For runners who love beaches, running the GC Rayong Marathon is an ideal option. The race is organised by the Rayong Marathon Health Running Club, associated with PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited. Long considered as Thailand’s most attractive marathon, GC Rayong Marathon will give you the chance to run on some the country’s most pristine beaches as the sun rises majestically over the Gulf of Thailand.
There are four race categories:
- Marathon (42.195km)
- Half marathon (21.1km)
- Mini marathon (10.55km)
- Micro-marathon (5km).
Usually held around November, this is a great chance for running enthusiasts to visit one of Thailand’s most beautiful (and lesser-known) provinces. To ensure you are fully fit and well rested, we suggest staying at the Centara Q Resort Rayong, a beautiful four-star trendy beach resort and spa. Recently renovated, this is the perfect place to base yourself before and after the race.
3. Phukethon
Welcoming runners from all corners of the globe, Phukethon is one of Asia’s most popular races. Taking you through the Sino-Portuguese streets of Phuket Town and the adjacent countryside, this is certainly a race you will not want to miss. One of the highlights of the race is the ascent to Promthep Cape, one of the most scenic viewpoints on the whole island.
There are three major categories:
- Marathon (42.195km)
- Half marathon (21.1km)
- 10km
All the above distances have been certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations. For those who are travelling with their families, there’s also the Jelly Beach Run (5km) and the Colour Fun Run.
As one of Asia’s most popular beach holiday destinations, we suggest staying at the Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket. Boasting a modern gym, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a luxury spa, the Centara Grand in Phuket will be the perfect resting spot for the whole family.
For those who love to explore uncharted territory, there are also plenty of trail races available in Thailand. Ultra-Trail Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most challenging trail races that features different race categories of 104km, 65km, 33km and 20km. Participants run through Doi Inthanon National Park, one of the most popular national parks in Thailand. Famous for its waterfalls, running trails, remote hilltribe villages, and picturesque views, Doi Inthanon is a paradise for those looking to experience nature.
Trail races are also available in other provinces as well, such as Monkey Trail in Koh Samui, the Moon 100 in Koh Phangan, Doi Khok Trail in Lampang and Nan Mountain Trail.
So, if you’re a hardcore endurance runner, casual jogger, or simply looking to do something different, sign up for one of these marathons in Thailand (at the appropriate distance for your skill level, of course). You’ll return home with some serious bragging rights.
