Centara’s Green Fins Project Helps Protect the Sea

Posted on 14 Sep 15

Maldives may be best known for their stunning beaches, however, it is those in the know who head to the Maldives to dive. With an abundance of sea life, colorful coral, and a shipwreck, the underwater playground is filled with beauty and excitement. In order to preserve the delicate marine ecosystem, Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa and Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives have been implementing innovative and effective initiatives to minimize their impact on the environment.

Both Centara properties in the Maldives are participating in the ‘Green Fins Project’, the world’s first and only set of environmental standards for scuba diving and snorkeling centres. The scoring for ‘Green Fins’ is based on the lowest score of 0 and the highest score of 330. Keep in mind, the lower the score, the better. The recent ‘Green Fins’ assessment for Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa produced a score of 61, a significant improvement on last year’s score of 121. Centara Grand is one of the top performers in the Maldives. Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa scored 115, which will only continue to improve as this is their first year with the project.

In order to best facilitate diving experiences for guests while protecting the precious marine life and ecosystem, instructors at both Centara properties, through Best Dives Maldives, provide a clear briefing on responsible diving practices that reminds snorkelers and divers to respect their underwater surroundings.

Additionally, Centara properties already have a policy designed to minimize coral damage and ensure marine life protection that is incorporated into the company’s EarthCheck policy. Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa and Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa currently have their Silver Certification from EarthCheck.
