Fill Your Days with These Things to Do in Koh Samui

By Centara Hotels Resorts 掲載日 02 Jan 25

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most popular and beautiful islands. One of its unique aspects is that there are so many places to see and things to do on the island that your days can be as busy as you want them to be.

Must-Visit Koh Samui Beaches

Although the island is ringed with beaches, two must-visit beaches on Koh Samui are Chaweng Beach and Choeng Mon Beach. Both offer wide stretches of powdery white sand and calm waters, perfect for a family day at the beach.

Chaweng Beach is in front of the largest town, offering a livelier and more colourful experience. It’s one of the most popular beaches on the island. Hotels, bars and restaurants along the beach provide plenty of food, drinks and entertainment. Choeng Mon Beach, in the northeast corner of the island, is a bit slower and quieter, just the thing for sunbathers who want to bask in the warm sun and read a book. Both beaches have plenty of water sports like kayaking, jet-skiing, and parasailing.

Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai)

Just across the peninsula from Choeng Mon Beach is the majestic Big Buddha Temple, known as Wat Phra Yai to local residents. This impressive golden 12-metre-tall Buddha statue is located on its own island, which can be reached by a causeway. It can be seen from several kilometres up and down the coast. A colourful staircase with serpentine railings leads up to the statue, and there are temples and places to explore around the grounds. The best time to visit is in the morning when the monks perform their morning chants.

Secret Buddha Garden

Another fascinating thing to do and see in Koh Samui is to drive to the top of Kkun Nim Peak in the centre of the island. There, you'll find the legacy of Khun Nim Thongsuk, a local durian farmer famous for his advancements in growing the fruit. He created a secret Buddha garden containing statues of Budda, whimsical animals, and statues of Khun Nim's family. The garden has a beautiful stream flowing through it and is an enchanting place to visit.

Fisherman's Village, Bophut

Explore what was once a thriving fisherman's village on Koh Samui. The pier has since collapsed, and the fishermen have moved on, but they've left the picturesque, old-style buildings behind for everyone to explore and enjoy. Many restaurants and accommodations have taken over these quaint buildings, and every Friday, the main street of the village is transformed into Fisherman's Village Walking Street Market, which attracts shoppers from all over the island. It’s the ideal place to shop for souvenirs while enjoying some local seafood.

Samui Elephant Sanctuary, Bophut

A visit to the Samui Elephant Sanctuary will show you what environmentalists are doing to save the elephants of Thailand, and it's a fun thing to do during any family holiday in Koh Samui. The sanctuary is a retirement home for elephants who have spent years toiling in the logging industry and focuses on promoting ethical tourism. Guests can observe and feed the resident elephants and learn about their mistreatment in their former lives. A visit to the sanctuary also includes a vegetarian buffet lunch where you can learn more about the sanctuary from the knowledgeable staff.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

Ang Thong National Marine Park is a cluster of 42 forested islands 30 kilometres north-west of Koh Samui. The islands feature stunning limestone cliffs, caves, and inland marine lakes and lagoons. Day tours from Koh Samui offer snorkelling, kayaking, basking on the beaches, and exploring the islands on foot. The tours can be arranged through your hotel. It's a fascinating way for the entire family to spend a day in paradise.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai

Hin Ta and Hin Yai, also known as Grandpa and Grandma, are a group of giant photogenic boulders in Lamai Beach in the southeastern part of Koh Samui. The boulders offer a great place for children to climb on and explore. The waters around the boulders also provide fascinating snorkelling with colourful fish and other marine life making their homes in and around the massive boulders.

Lamai Viewpoint

Things to do in Koh Samui include a visit to Lamai Viewpoint.

Near Hin Ta and Hin Yai, Lamai Viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the coast of Koh Samui and a number of attractions. The Valentine Stone is a large, naturally heart-shaped boulder at the viewpoint that is popular as a photo backdrop. The café at the viewpoint offers a place to sit, enjoy a drink and a meal, and take in the spectacular view. There's also an exciting zipline ride suitable for all ages that provides the sensation of skimming above the jungle and across the mouth of a valley before ending at the viewpoint.
